Because AMH is only produced by a woman’s eggs, the actual number of maturing eggs can be predicted using an AMH blood test. The number of eggs growing within a woman’s ovaries is a sign of ovarian health and overall egg quality. Normal AMH levels mean a normal number of eggs growing, lower AMH levels means fewer eggs are growing.
Typically a woman’s ovaries tend to show 15 – 20 maturing eggs at any one time. Under these circumstances AMH levels and chances for pregnancy are normal. As maturing egg numbers decline, both AMH levels and chances for pregnancy decline with them. Science proves that it is harder to become pregnant, either naturally or using IVF, when ovaries produce fewer eggs than they should.
Grow better eggs
IVF doctors have found, that when a patient’s ovaries produce fewer eggs than normal, these eggs are less likely to fertilize and develop into good quality embryos. When an egg is fertilized but fails to develop well, the failure is blamed on ‘poor egg quality.’ While AMH predicts egg numbers, it also points to how well these eggs will fertilize and then turn into a pregnancy. For all of these factors just discussed, doctors use the term ‘Ovarian Reserve.’
